Lloyd Webber shrugs off musical's critics

Remembering Sparklehorse frontman Mark Linkous: 1962-2010

(Entertainment Weekly) -- Mark Linkous, the Virginia-born indie-rock fixture best known for his work in the lo-fi pysch-folk project Sparklehorse, as well as for collaborations with artists ranging from Danger Mouse to Tom Waits, Iggy Pop and PJ Harvey, died March 6 of a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

He came very close to dying once before, while touring with Radiohead in 1996; an overdose of pills, alcohol and anti-depressants caused him to lose consciousness in a London hotel room for 14 hours, with his legs pinned beneath him. His subsequent heart attack left him legally dead for several minutes, and the time he spent unconscious without circulation to his legs put him in a wheelchair for six months.

Why was George Clooney upset at the Oscars?

(The Frisky) -- Was is just me, or did George Clooney seem upset at the Oscars last night?

His sourpuss act in the front row almost made me miss Jack Nicholson smirking in his dark sunglasses. And George's lady, Elisabetta Canalis, wasn't looking too chipper either -- those two had "Debbie Downer" written all over their faces.

Cowell (sort of) confirms he's engaged

(PEOPLE.com) -- Simon Cowell scowling -- typical. Simon Cowell blushing? Indeed.

The famously cantankerous "American Idol" judge squirmed in his seat on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Monday as the host dissected reports of Cowell's engagement to Idol makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy.

Lloyd Webber shrugs off musical's critics

London, England (CNN) -- Andrew Lloyd Webber has defended his new musical from criticism on online forums even before its official opening on Tuesday night.

The musical was described on one review site as "stupid" and "appalling" while many postings said it did not live up to expectations of Lloyd Webber's massive stage hit "Phantom of the Opera."

Jessica Simpson says she still trusts people

(PEOPLE.com) -- Despite John Mayer's recent kiss-and-tell revelations about their sex life, Jessica Simpson says she remains, deep down, a trusting person.

"I'm not as guarded as you would think. I should probably be more guarded. I trust a lot of people, actually," the actress and singer, 29, told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show Tuesday morning.
